🐪 Desert Camel Trekking in the Sahara Desert of Morocco
Spending a day on a camel trek is one of the most authentic ways to discover Morocco’s mysterious landscapes and experience traditional nomadic life. Camel trekking takes you deep into the heart of the Sahara Desert, offering unforgettable scenery and cultural encounters.
Along the journey, you will pass stunning landscapes such as golden sand dunes, lush palm oases, Atlas Mountain peaks, and the famous “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs,” including Ouarzazate, often called the “Moroccan Hollywood.”
Sunrise and sunset over the Sahara create magical moments that stay in your memory forever. During your trek, you will ride camels across the desert of Merzouga, where days are bright and nights are filled with millions of ststars.
The best time for camel trekking in Morocco is from September to February.
🌅 Sunset Camel Trek Experience
Your adventure begins around 5 PM, just before sunset.
You will ride a camel for approximately 30 minutes toward the spectacular dunes of Erg Chebbi. You will be accompanied by an experienced local guide who knows the desert paths, hidden oases, and the best viewpoints.
Once you arrive, you will climb to the top of the highest dunes to enjoy breathtaking views of:
Endless golden dunes
Palm tree oases
Distant Atlas Mountains
This is the perfect moment to enjoy peace, silence, and the magical desert sunset. After the experience, you will return to your hotel or camp around 8 PM.
🌄 Sunrise Camel Trek Experience
The sunrise camel trek begins early in the morning before dawn.
You will ride across the silent dunes as the desert slowly lights up with golden colors. The only sound you will hear is the footsteps of your camel moving across the sand, creating a peaceful and unforgettable atmosphere.
After reaching the highest dune to watch the sunrise, you will return to your hotel or camp. A traditional Berber breakfast with mint tea will be served to complete your experience.
🏕️ Overnight Camel Trek & Desert Camping
For a deeper desert experience, you can choose an overnight camel trek.
In the afternoon (around two hours before sunset), you will start your journey into the Sahara on camelback and arrive at a traditional Berber camp in the heart of the desert.
At the camp, you will enjoy:
Traditional Gnawa music and dance
Henna painting
Cultural performances
Dinner under the stars
The evening is often spent around the campfire, enjoying music and desert atmosphere. In some camps, additional entertainment such as traditional shows may also be included.
🌌 Day & Night Camel Trek with Nomad Experience
For a more immersive adventure, you can visit a desert oasis located between the dunes, where you may spend the night in nomad-style tents.
During this experience, you will:
Have dinner and sleep under the stars
Enjoy the calm beauty of the desert night
Witness the glowing dunes under the moonlight
The next morning, after breakfast in the camp, you will ride camels to visit local nomad families and share a traditional lunch with them.
